The BOGG program is a state-funded program that waives enrollment fees and health fee at California community colleges. To qualify, students must be California residents or AB540 eligible and meet specific income requirements. Qualified students who complete a FAFSA are automatically considered for the BOGG. You can also pick up an application in the Financial Aid Office.
Cal Grants are state funded grants awarded to eligible middle and low income California residents pursuing an undergraduate degree at a California college or university. Recipients must be enrolled in at least six (6) units and meet the priority application filing deadline.
There are three types of Cal Grants:
The California Chafee Grant Program is available for current or former foster youth under 23 years of age to use for career and technical training or college courses. The maximum grant amount is $5000 per year. Students must be enrolled in six (6) or more units each semester to be eligible for the Chafee Grant.
The Federal Pell Grant provides grant assistance to students who demonstrate financial need and who haven't earned a bachelor's or graduate degree. Students do not need to be enrolled in college full-time to be eligible, but awards are prorated based on enrollment status. Award amounts will vary by student based on financial need and enrollment status.
The FSEOG is a federal grant for undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need who have not received a bachelor's degree. FSEOG awards range from $100 to $4,000 a year. Awards are subject to availability of funds with first priority given to students enrolled full-time who receive a Federal Pell Grant and demonstrate exceptional need.
The FWS (also known as College Work Study, or CWS) allows eligible students to earn a portion of their financial aid through part-time employment on or off-campus. The student worker gains valuable job experience and receives a monthly payroll check. FWS funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to students who demonstrate financial need.
The Full-Time Student Success Grant is a new financial aid program for Cal Grant B recipients attending a California community college full time. On top of the $1,656 annual Cal Grant B award paid at community colleges, the Full-Time Student Success Grant pays full-time Cal Grant B recipients an additional $600 annually. All full-time community college students receiving Cal Grant B will be offered this assistance, and only full-time students can receive this benefit.
Scholarships are sources of free money for college, and are usually not based on financial need. Instead, they may recognize your grades or test scores, athletic ability, major, special talents, or community service.
During the spring semester each year (Mid-January to April), current VVC students are invited to submit a single scholarship application for all VVC-sponsored scholarships, for the following academic year. A college-wide committee reviews the applications and announces scholarship recipients by June 30th. Check out the VVC website for a list of scholarships and how to apply.
